Man fatally shot by RCMP on Vancouver Island First Nation

TOFINO (NEWS 1130) – A man was shot and killed by Mounties near Tofino Saturday night, prompting the province’s police watchdog to investigate.
According to a statement from the Independent Investigations Office, two officers went to a home in the Opitsaht community of the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation around 9:30 p.m. Saturday to reports of a woman being held against her will.
“The incident resulted in one man being shot and killed by officers,” the statement continues.
A man is dead after being shot by an RCMP officer at Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation on Vancouver Island. Officers were responding to report of woman being held against her will. Chantel Moore, who was shot dead by police in NB last June, was a member Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation.

The woman was taken to hospital, and police say no one else was hurt.
Vancouver Island General Investigative Section (GIS) is investigating the call, including allegations that the woman was being held against her will. The IIO is looking into the shooting, as it does with any police incident that causes harm or death.
The man who was arrested remains in custody.
Police and the IIO say no other details can be provided at this time.
