Boy facing alleged racist bullying receives outpouring of support

CALGARY (660NEWS) — Following a story CityNews brought you last week, a boy who was facing racism at his school north of Calgary received an outpouring of support.

But, according to James Lasu, the bullying has continued at Our Lady Queen of Peace School since he told his story.

“No, actually I think it was Friday or Thursday a kid, he called me a monkey again,” Lasu said.

Some of the people who reached out include a boxing instructor with an offer to sponsor him, a grade four class from North East Calgary wrote him a letter of support, and several people and groups donated art supplies.

“I cannot imagine what it must feel like to have your child come to and tell you that you’ve had these terrible, terrible things happen to you,” said Sander Sariolgu, who helped coordinate the art supplies donation. “It’s just appalling and mortifying.”

Through the bullying, Lasu says it’s nice to know people have his back.

“A lot of people have reached out to me. It means a lot to me to know that there’s a lot of people out there who do understand.”

Understandably, it’s been incredibly tough on James’ family who are infuriated nothing has been done to bring it to an end.

“I was driving for work and I almost lost control,” said Joseph Lasu, James’ father. “I didn’t see that there is any step that the school or the board of education took it seriously to stop this kind of thing.”

Joseph still hopes the families can meet and a resolution can be found, adding it’s hard to stay optimistic, but making it clear his son won’t be bullied out of the school.

“James cannot be moved to another school because he will feel defeated,” Lasu said. “He’s been bullied, I’m requesting that child has to be moved out from that school because he’s the one causing the roots. The tree started to grow there because of him. He started it now it’s going from other child to other child and three kids are doing the same thing”
