Skier stuck on Mount Seymour, 2 hikers missing on Grouse Mountain all safely rescued

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — It was a busy night for search and rescue teams responding to calls for help on two mountains.

Dave Barnett, search manager for North Shore Rescue says crews got a call late last night of a skier who got stuck in a precarious part of Mount Seymour called Suicide Gulleyon.

“It’s complicated to navigate in there. There’s only a couple of real safe routes to get there, and that’s the route our team is taking.”

A crew of five snowshoers made it through the steep terrain to find the man missing a ski but otherwise fine.

“He was in pretty good condition, able to travel, so they’re hiking out. They’re probably getting close to halfway out,” Barnett tells NEWS 1130.

The search manager adds, the skier should be back to safety around noon if all goes well. “But things can happen, and the train gets a little tougher,” Barnett adds.

“There was some kind of newer loose snow there, and there are some steep slopes, but the overall avalanche conditions aren’t extremely high or anything but the terrain in the best of conditions can be steep and tough to navigate in there.”

At the same time, two hikers were stuck on Grouse Mountian — both also were rescued safely.

NSR is taking this opportunity to remind people heading out to the mountains to watch for unstable ice.
