Smoke in Surrey Wednesday morning caused by weather, not fire

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – If you smelled smoke in Surrey Wednesday morning, it wasn’t because of an active fire.

According to fire crews, a weather phenomenon known as an inversion was trapping air from various sources.

“The cloud cover’s really low so all the people burning wood in their wood-burning stove and all the industry — that smoke has been kept at lower levels,” Assistant Fire Chief Steve Serbic said Wednesday morning. “In some parts of Surrey it actually looks quite foggy, so residents were concerned. But we don’t have any active fires in Surrey at this time.”

A temperature inversion happens when air at higher elevations is warmer than the air at lower elevations. This phenomenon is known to trap cloud cover and smoke as denser air settles down.

NEWS 1130 and the Surrey Fire department both received a number of calls with questions about the smoke.

“Our crews go out and investigate every single call. But we’re pretty confident that it is from this inversion,” Serbic said.

Despite the haze, there are no air quality advisories in effect.
