Vancouver reports big drop in traffic deaths during COVID-19 pandemic

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – With many of us leaving our cars parked during the COVID-19 pandemic, that resulted in a big drop in collisions over the past year in Vancouver.

There was a 39 per cent drop in traffic deaths and a 55 per cent decline in traffic-related ER visits, according to the City.

It’s pointing to its efforts during the pandemic to create walking and cycling space, and reduce speed limits in some areas.

The City says overall vehicle volume dropped to their lowest levels in the first week of April 2020 to 50 to 60 per cent of their typical pre-pandemic levels.

But the cars have gradually come back on the roads, with the City saying the volume is back to 85 to 90 per cent of pre-pandemic levels.
