ANMORE (NEWS 1130) – A German Shepherd puppy is dead after it was taken by a cougar in Anmore Thursday night.
The BC Conservation Officer Service says the three-month-old puppy was grabbed while it was out for a walk with its handler, who is a member of Coquitlam Search and Rescue.
The man had just received the canine last week with the hopes of training it as an SAR dog.
“A man was walking his German Shepherd puppy on a leash along Sunnyside Road when a cougar came out of the bushes and grabbed the dog,” said conservation officer Chris Miller.
“The man tried to hang on to the leash and kicked at the cougar but it was able to take off with the puppy in its mouth,” he added.
Despite patrols of the area, conservation officers weren’t able to find the cougar involved in this attack.

Friends who have started a GoFundMe for the dog’s owner say the animal, named “Diez,” was training to be part of local search and rescue teams.
The dog’s owner is a volunteer with the Sasamat Fire Department and Coquitlam Search and Rescue.

This is the second cougar attack on a dog in as many days. A small dog was put down after it was severely hurt in Port Moody on Tuesday. According to BCCOS, the attack happened shortly before 11 p.m. when a man was walking his dog on a leash in his townhouse complex near Foxwood Drive.
“It’s unknown at this time if this separate incident in Port Moody from three nights ago is linked to the same animal that attacked the dog last night. We understand the public is concerned about these incidents and we’re taking the situation very seriously,” said Miller.
BCCOS is looking for the cougar or cougars responsible for the two attacks.
