North Delta woman shaken after man makes sexual comments, followed her off bus

“I was scared, but I was trying to stay calm.” A woman in North Delta was trying to run some errands when she says she was accosted with unwelcomed sexual comments from a stranger Thursday night. Ashley Burr reports.

DELTA (NEWS 1130) — A woman in North Delta was left shaken after she says she received unwelcome sexual comments from a stranger Thursday night after getting off a bus while running some errands.

Around 7 p.m. near 80th Street and 112th Street, Lerranda Remming says a man started talking to her while she was on the bus and then proceeded to follow her as she exited.

“That’s when he started commenting on my body. Basically, he said ‘oh your body, your body is so great and wonderful, it’s so curvy and sexy,'” said Remming, adding he also made a gesture to comment on her chest

As the comments proceeded to get increasingly vulgar, Remming tried to find a way to de-escalate the situation.

“[The man was] keeping right beside me, right at the pace, and I was scared, but I was trying to stay calm,” Remming told CityNews.

“I told him, ‘hey listen, I’m really calm in this situation but others would not be, but this is sexual harassment and people could call the cops on you.’”

But her warning was not taken, and Remming says the man continued to follow her and try to engage in conversation.

Eventually, he told her to take a photo of his business card so she could call him.

“At first I didn’t want to and then I was like wait it’s probably good if I take a snap of his info so I can report it,” she said.

“The scariest part is when I walked away, he pulled out a ‘perfume bottle’ out of his backpack and wanted to spray me with it.”

Remming was able to get away and has reported the man to Delta police

“Other women completely understand the feeling you get when they are putting that kind of disgusting sexual harassment on you,” Remming said.

Angela Marie MacDougall with the Battered Women’s Society says this kind of situation is all too familiar to many women.

“Her experience of being sexually harassed on transit and it continuing until she left and on her way home – that is really common. We see those transitions for women being on transit and leaving transit can be a very vulnerable place for women,” MacDougall says.

A story that has recently caught worldwide attention is that of a 33-year old woman from England who was last seen walking alone. Her body was recently found. A local police officer was charged with her kidnap and murder.

This sparked a slew of posts from women sharing their own fears felt on a daily basis.

“So many women are afraid of being and walking alone, and we need more action in terms of prevention. Teaching men and boys what is appropriate behaviour and what is not,” MacDougall says.

“It doesn’t matter if people are like, ‘oh it’s not that big of a deal if you feel threatened or unsafe.’ You are in the entire right to tell your story,” Remming adds.
