Shooting in Surrey sends one man to hospital in serious condition

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – A man is in serious condition after a road-side shooting in Surrey Monday night.

The RCMP says officers received calls around 7:30 p.m. reporting two men fighting, and that shots had been fired along Highway 99 north of King George.

Two men — one who had been shot — were found when police arrived. The victim was taken to the hospital in serious condition while the second man was arrested.

Police say a gun was found at the scene and that both men “are associated to a single vehicle,” which has been seized.

Both men are known to police and the shooting is believed to be targeted.

“The initial indications are that the shooting is related to a dispute between people known to one another,” said Cpl. Elenore Sturko. “Both of these men are known to police, however, there is not indication at this time that is shooting is related to recent gang activity. However, we are investigating possible links to the drug trade.”

She says there’s “no indication that there’s a continued to the risk related to this incident,” though what happened would have put others at risk while it was ongoing.

“This is related to a single vehicle, with individuals in a dispute with one another who are known to one another. So the initial information that had circulated in the public about it being related to some type of road-rage incident is incorrect,” she added.

Mounties are looking to speak with anyone who may have dash-cam footage or information about the shooting. You can contact the RCMP at 604.599.0502 or Crime Stoppers to remain anonymous at 1.800.222.8477.

Highway 99 closure

The incident is somewhat connected to the overnight closure of Highway 99.

Sturko says officers had been blocking off the highway as part of the shooting investigation when someone smashed into an RCMP vehicle.

“We’re investigating that individual for impaired driving,” Sturko explained.

That person has also been arrested.

The incident shut down Highway 99 for several hours. The route reopened in both directions Tuesday morning.
