Cougars linked to dog attacks in Port Moody, Anmore killed

PORT MOODY (NEWS 1130) – Two cougars have been put down, following dog attacks in the Port Moody and Anmore area.

The Ministry of Environment says two cougars linked to dog attacks in the area were captured and euthanized Thursday night. It says the Conservation Officer Service has been “closely monitoring” the animals’ activities for several weeks and looking into sightings and interactions in the area.

“While we recognize this is an unfortunate outcome, it was necessary as the risk to the public was far too great – these cougars were displaying repeated behaviour indicating they had lost their fear of humans and were comfortable living and hunting non-natural prey in an urban residential setting,” the ministry said in a statement.

Last week, a puppy in Anmore was killed by a cougar. The owner of that pup had planned to train it to become a search and rescue dog.

A small dog was also attacked in Port Moody last week. The dog’s injuries were so severe, it had to be put down.
