Police watchdog investigating altercation outside Vancouver jail

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – An altercation outside the Vancouver jail on Saturday night is now being reviewed by B.C.’s police watchdog.

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) is looking into why a man, who came into contact with a police officer, ended up in the hospital.

A statement issued by the IIO confirms it happened around 8:40 p.m. outside the jail on East Cordova Street near Main Street.

“As the man may have sustained injuries during the interaction, Emergency Health Services were called, and he was taken to a local hospital for assessment,” the statement continues.

Since few details have been released, it’s not clear if the man’s injuries are serious.

A response from the Vancouver Police Department explains an officer allegedly made “physical contact” with the man.

“The VPD’s Professional Standards Section notified the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner (OPCC) and the Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO). The IIO has asserted jurisdiction and the OPCC has confirmed there will be an investigation into the conduct of the two officers,” the VPD says. “The VPD is currently reviewing the operational deployment status of the officers involved.”

The IIO investigates all police-involved incidents that result in serious harm or death.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the IIO through its witness toll line at 1-855-446-8477 or through its website.
