Port Moody, Anmore will see day-long BC Hydro outage due to replacement work

PORT MOODY (NEWS 1130) – Hundreds of BC Hydro customers in Anmore and Port Moody will be without power for most of Tuesday.

The utility says the planned outage is to deal with some urgent work on its infrastructure. It means people won’t have any electricity until about 9 p.m.

“We know there’s never a good time for an outage — planned or unplanned — however, the benefit of a planned outage is that it offers certainty of when it starts and ends,” explained Kevin Acquino with BC Hydro.

“If we were to leave this work, it would result in an unplanned outage due to equipment failure and that means no warning and likely a much longer outage for our customers,” he added.

The work is expected to impact about 1,200 customers. Acquino says crews will be replacing switch gear “that has reached end of life.”

“And to do this work safely, we need to take an outage,” he said. “We need to conduct about three hours of switching at the start and end of the outage, and the work itself takes about 10 hours to complete.”

The outage began at about 5 a.m. and while it’s expected to run until about 9 p.m., Acquino says BC Hydro is working to have the power back up earlier, if possible.
