TransLink approves 2.3% fare increase to start in July, 2021

NEW WESTMINSTER (NEWS 1130) — Starting July 1, a trip on transit in Metro Vancouver is going to cost a little bit more.

A 2.3 per cent fare increase was unanimously approved by TransLink’s board of directors at their quarterly public meeting Thursday.

The rate changes work out to a bump of 5 cents for a one-zone adult fare, 10 cents on a two-zone adult fare, and 10 cents on a three-zone fare using a pre-loaded Compass Card. A monthly pass will increase by $2.25 for one zone, $3.00 for two zones, and $4.05 for three zones.

The small increase follows the cancellation of a 4.6  per cent 2020 fare hike due to COVID-19. Pre-pandemic, fares were set to increase by 4.1 per cent in 2021.

“Lower ridership and fare revenue has dropped TransLink’s cost recovery rate significantly and this fare increase is necessary to permit TransLink to maintain our service levels. However, this lower fare
increase than what was originally provided for in the Phase Two Investment Plan supports affordability of fares for TransLink’s customers and economic recovery objectives,” according to a report to the board.
