Canadian Screen Awards go virtual — again

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — For the second straight year, COVID-19 has forced the Canadian Screen Awards to hold a virtual ceremony.

The awards honour the best in Canadian entertainment, including film and television.

CEO Beth Janson says they’ve had a lot of time to adapt and adjust for this year’s festivities, which is a far cry from last year when they had to cancel the in-person ceremony just two weeks before it was set to go ahead.

“It’s not going to be just a Zoom call of an awards show,” she chuckles. “We have a lot of exciting and creative things in store.”

She says it’s been a big year for Canadian content.

“Obviously with ‘Schitt’s Creek’ sweeping the Emmy’s the way they did, and so many other shows that are making a big impact in Canada, and outside of Canada, we’re excited to celebrate those people,” says Janson.

She says she’s excited to see which performers are going to be recognized.

“Our nominees and our winners are chosen by our industry, by our membership which is thousands of people working in the industry across the country,” says Janson. “We, as the staff and the head of the Academy, I don’t have any say in who wins or who gets nominated, but I think what’s been really wonderful is that our industry and our members have consistently chosen a diverse slate of nominees.”

Last year, “Schitt’s Creek” and “Cardinal” were the big winners for TV, while the refugee-drama “Antigone” won Best Motion Picture.

The nominees for the awards are set to be released on March 30, while the actual show will be held in May.
