Kamloops, Kelowna take over as hosts of Western Hockey League

KAMLOOPS (NEWS 1130) — Western Hockey League (WHL) teams from across B.C. are in the Interior the next few weeks and Kamloops’ mayor says he’s happy to see his community become a bubble for players.

Mayor Ken Christian says he thinks it’s important the games be hosted in his city, especially considering the challenging year the pandemic has brought on.

“We need something to cheer for … and getting kids back on the ice and having a distraction from the pandemic I think will be great for the community,” he says.

He adds it’s also very important young people in his community have this outlet.

“Particularly the 20-year-olds,” he said. “To get an opportunity to salvage a season and get out there and be seen by some scouts.”

All five WHL teams in the B.C. division will play their shortened 24-game season in Kamloops and Kelowna. Teams will only play within their own division.

Teams from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Washington already started their season in B.C. Opening night was Friday.
