Workers rescued from Walmart walk-in freezer after car crashes into Saanich mall

SAANICH (NEWS 1130) — Several employees at a Saanich Walmart had to be rescued Friday afternoon, after a vehicle crashed into the store and trapped them inside a walk-in freezer.

Police say it happened around 4:30 p.m. at the Uptown Shopping Plaza.

A vehicle drove through a concrete wall in the plaza’s parkade, and into the Walmart, according to Const. Markus Anastasiades.

“The vehicle did go through a concrete wall which isn’t as strong as people think,” he said. “Then I understand it pinned a door of a walk-in freezer closed and there were people working in that freezer at the time.”

Remarkably, no one was seriously injured.

Anastasiades says they’re now trying to find out what led to the crash.

“We have traffic analysts conducting their investigation, fortunately, we do have some video surveillance that we’re looking to obtain as well.”

The investigation is ongoing.
