Vancouver city council pushes province to prioritize police, firefighters COVID vaccine

SURREY (NEWS 1130) — Police and firefighters in Surrey and White Rock are being vaccinated against COVID-19, but the same can’t be said for their counterparts in Vancouver.

A motion from Adriane Carr of the Green Party has passed unanimously at council Tuesday — calling on the province to give the police and firefighters priority access to COVID-19 vaccines.

Carr’s motion calls on Vancouver’s Mayor to send a letter to Premier Horgan, Health Minister Dix and Vancouver MLAs to ensure first responders get priority access, with firefighters on the Downtown Eastside given immediate priority.

Carr says she was alarmed to learn 12 firefighters at the Downtown Eastside fire hall are now isolating.

“That made me realize if there is a wave that goes through our firefighter staff or our police staff, if it got to that, and there had to be a shutdown of a fire hall, how much would the public be at risk?”

Carr says setting up the citizens of Vancouver for such a situation would be unconscionable.
