Educators in Vancouver Coastal Health region rolling up sleeves soon for COVID-19 jab

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — All school staff in Vancouver are set to get their first round of COVID-19 vaccinations, according to the Vancouver School Board.

According to a letter Vancouver School District received from Vancouver Coastal Health, all staff will be eligible for their shots Friday.

VCH will identify and contact various schools on when and how they can book their vaccinations in the coming weeks.

Most of these clinics will be held on weekends and outside of school hours.

BC Teachers’ Federation President Teri Mooring says other districts could be getting the jab soon too.

“The local health authorities are determining the hotspots and those notifications are going out its districts and schools in the lower mainland, the Fraser Valley, and some other places in the province as well.”

The letter sent to Vancouver teachers says all staff will be eligible regardless of their role in the district.

Teachers in Surrey have already begun getting their shots, which Mooring says was important since the Surrey say a high transmission of COVID-19.

However, she says teachers in Vancouver — which has also seen a high transmission rate — have been at the mercy of the vaccine supply.
Mooring adds, hearing the news has been relieving for educators in the district and she is grateful.

“It’s necessary. We know that schools are seeing record numbers of exposure notifications. We’re seeing the daily numbers of COVID cases are really alarming. And we know the cases of the variant are starting to overtake the number of the original COVID, and we’re seeing it outside the Lower Mainland … so it’s absolutely crucial that teachers get vaccinated.”
