S&P/TSX composite edges lower in early trading, U.S. stock markets mixed

TORONTO — Losses in the technology sector weighed on the Toronto Stock Exchange as Canada’s main stock index edged lower in early trading.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 8.46 points at 19,313.46.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 197.46 points at 34,233.45. The S&P 500 index was up 12.02 points at 4,182.44, while the Nasdaq composite was down 23.80 points at 14,014.96.

The Canadian dollar traded for 79.94 cents US compared with  79.81 cents US on Thursday.

The June crude contract was down five cents at US$63.46 per barrel and the May natural gas contract was up four cents at US$2.70 per mmBTU.

The June gold contract was up US$9.30 at US$1,776.10 an ounce and the May copper contract was down a penny at US$4.21 a pound.
