Man killed in targeted shooting in Vancouver’s Coal Harbor neighbourhood

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Vancouver’s Coal Harbor was swarming with police on Saturday night after shots were fired near a popular restaurant.

Just after 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Vancouver Police say they responded to the shooting outside Cardero’s restaurant near Coal Harbour Quay and Cardero Street, finding one man shot.

After attempts of resuscitation failed, the VPD says the man was pronounced dead on the scene.

On Monday, police identified the victim as Harpreet Singh Dhaliwal. The 31-year-old was from Abbotsford.

Police say preliminary evidence indicates the shooting was targeted.

In a statement, Constable Tania Visintin says, “We are very concerned about the potential impact on the public of an incident like this.”

“This happened in a busy spot on a nice evening and an innocent person could have gotten hurt.”

No arrests have been made so far and investigators don’t believe the public’s safety is at risk.

A witness to the Saturday night shooting, Alex, described the scene to NEWS 1130. He says he was walking along Hastings Street with his wife and baby when he heard multiple loud bangs at around 9 p.m. in the area of Cardero’s Restaurant.

“There was a lot of police cars coming by, at a high rate of speed, circling the area,” he explained. “I saw that whole bunch of cops zoned in on the area around Hastings and Boulton.”

This is Vancouver’s fifth homicide of the year.

Anyone with information about Saturday’s shooting is asked to call VPD Homicide Unit at 604-717-2500 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
