Surrey man charged with arson in five Newton-area fires

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – A Surrey man has been charged in connection with five separate arsons in the city’s Newton area that all happened last Thursday.

Balveer Singh Boparai, 51, is charged with five counts of arson causing damage to property.

The investigation started on April 15 when Surrey Fire Services were told several small fires were set in garbage cans in Newton, between 12:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.

Then, around 12:50 p.m., another fire was set in a dumpster at a fast food restaurant on King George Boulevard near 64th Ave. Officers quickly gathered enough evidence to identify a suspect, patrolled the area, and made an arrest at a nearby bus stop.

Boparai was held in custody for court and later released.
