West Vancouver mayor quits country club offering ‘exclusive’ vaccine clinic

WEST VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — The mayor of West Vancouver has cancelled her membership at a country club after learning it planned to host an “exclusive” COVID-19 vaccine clinic for members.

The CBC reported Friday that the Hollyburn Country Club had sent a letter to members offering on-site shots of the AstraZeneca vaccine. The club charges a $60,000 “entrance fee,” and membership costs more than $300 a month.

On Saturday, Mayor Mary-Ann Booth said she did not receive an invitation, but was “appalled” when she read the news.

“It is completely unacceptable, and I have cancelled my family’s Hollyburn membership in response,” she tweeted Saturday.

“West Vancouver Council supports the Province’s vaccination program, which provides access to the vaccine to all British Columbians on a fair and equitable basis. I encourage everyone to register to be vaccinated through Provincially-approved channels.”

Currently, British Columbians born in 1981 or earlier are eligible to receive the jab at pharmacies. Demand for immunization has outpaced supply since the eligible age was lowered to 40 from 55. As of Friday, no pharmacies were accepting online bookings.
