Fundraiser for family of teen stabbed to death in Vancouver park raises thousands

Charges have been laid in the fatal stabbing of a 15-year-old boy on Saturday at Almond Park on Vancouver’s West Side. Kier Junos speaks with some of the people who saw parts of what happened.

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Friends and the community are remembering a 15-year-old boy who died over the weekend after he was stabbed in a park on Vancouver’s West Side.

An online fundraiser for the young man’s family has already doubled its goal, and the list of condolences continues to grow with messages of heartbreak over his death.

Some of the messages, apparently from friends, classmates, and their families, describe an energetic young man, full of humour. One donor, who indicates she was his teacher says “when he laughed, it was with all his soul.”

“The brightest light. I am heartbroken. I will always hold your huge smile and all of our deep conversations close to my heart,” one person wrote.

“Whether we were playing soccer, making jokes, or getting into arguments, you always managed to put a smile on my face. Throughout elementary you were my best friend and I will miss you so much. Sending live to your family,” another message said.

More than $14,000 has been raised so far for the teen’s family.

The teen died Sunday after emergency surgery at BC Children’s Hospital. He was stabbed in the chest during what police describe as some sort of confrontation between two groups of young people at Vancouver’s Almond Park Saturday afternoon near Alma and 13th in Dunbar.

While the fundraiser names him, the victim has not been publicly identified by police or family.

A 14-year-old boy was arrested and charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He can’t be named because he is a youth.

Homicide detectives have taken over the case, and anyone with information can call 604-717-2500 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
