Vancouver police call for ‘cooler heads’ after deadly stabbing of teen in Dunbar

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Vancouver Police are calling for calm, as tempers flare following the deadly stabbing of a 15-year-old boy in Dunbar on Saturday.

There are online posts calling for retribution, in some cases misidentifying the teens involved.

The situation is concerning, Sgt. Steve Addison with the VPD said Tuesday.

Police are asking everyone to be mindful of what they are posting online. They are also hoping parents are ensuring their parents are not participating in sharing these kinds of things on social media.

“We have seen some teens who have been wrongfully identified as having been part of the altercation that took place on Saturday. And we’ve seen other social media posts that have suggested retaliation or retribution against some other students who are alleged to have been involved,” Addison said.

The victim was stabbed in the chest during what police have described as some sort of confrontation Saturday between two groups at Almond Park near Alma and 13th Avenue on Vancouver’s Westside. He died the next day after emergency surgery at BC Children’s Hospital.

A 14-year-old boy has been charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He can’t be named because he is a youth.

The VPD’s Major Crimes Section is investigating the homicide.

Police say they are “deploying some additional resources” to address the concerns.

“We do have some information with regards to some events that may be taking place in the city in the next couple of days and we want to make sure that we have officers ready to respond and monitor those events, should we be required. But this is not specific to Almond Park or the area where the stabbing occurred,” Addison said.

He notes tensions are high among many teens.

“This is a very emotional situation for a lot of people and we’re simply asking for calm. We’re asking for cooler heads,” he said.
