Surrey RCMP say drug toxicity deaths rising in city

SURREY (NEWS 1130) — The Surrey RCMP is reporting an increase in drug toxicity deaths in the city as six people in the past week have died from a drug-related death.

Police admit they don’t know if the drugs were obtained from the same source, but do say that all the deaths are linked to the use of fentanyl/heroin.

Five of the six cases were located in private homes, suggesting the people were using drugs alone at the time.

Mounties add there have been 70 fatal overdoses in Surrey this year, 20 of those occurring this month so far.

Surrey RCMP is urging people in the community to following precautions if they are using drugs:

  • Call 9-1-1 if you or someone else may be overdosing
  • Do not use drugs alone
  • Be careful of how much you use
  • Always carry a Narcan kit
