DELTA (NEWS 1130) — One man has been killed near a busy Delta shopping mall Saturday afternoon in what police say is believed to be a “targeted” shooting.

Police were called 72nd Ave and 120th Street around 5 p.m. for reports of shots fired “near a gas station at 72nd Ave and 120th Street.” That intersection is where Scottsdale Centre is. Police tape went up around the parking lot and shoppers were told not to leave the Walmart.

“Police responded immediately and located a male who had been shot,” says a release from the Delta Police Department.

“Delta Police is confirming that the victim in the brazen shooting that occurred May 1, just before 5 pm, is deceased. Police are not releasing the victim’s name, or other identifying information at this time.”

Insp. Guy Leeson, head of Investigative Services, says although the investigation is in its early stages, police believe the shooting was targeted.

“This shooting took place in a very public manner, and we are very much aware of the possible risk to innocent bystanders,” he says in a statement.

“Officers have been interviewing witnesses in the area, and we are also in possession of video that appears to have been filmed immediately after the incident. Fortunately it doesn’t appear there was anyone else injured during this incident, but we ask those who might have any information to contact police.”

Anyone with information or dashcam footage is being asked to call (604) 946-4411.

Video posted to social media shows a man who appears to be wielding a gun getting into the back seat of a car.

A witness told NEWS 1130’s Tim James he saw a man with a gun outside of the Walmart.

“I heard like firecrackers and stuff, so I just looked back and then I saw like a guy with a gun, a black one, and he was trying to shoot the guy,” the witness says.

“He was trying to shoot him and he was running around our car.”
