VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — B.C.’s police watchdog has been called in after a woman was found dead in a Vancouver jail cell Saturday.

The woman was arrested around 9 a.m. near Oppenheimer Park on the Downtown Eastside, according to the Independent Investigations Office (IIO).

“At about 12:00 p.m. the same day, the woman was found to be unresponsive in her cell. Life-saving measures were attempted by police and Emergency Health Services, but those efforts were not successful, and the woman was pronounced dead,” says a astatement from the IIO.

“The IIO will investigate to determine what role, if any, officers may have played in the woman’s death.”

Witnesses to the arrest or anyone else with information is being asked to call 1-855-446-8477. The IIO is called in to all “officer-related” incidents that result in serious injury or death, even when there are no allegations of misconduct or wrongdoing.
