RICHMOND (NEWS 1130) – A workplace incident in Richmond has left one woman dead.

Mounties in Richmond say they received reports of an “industrial accident” along Boundary Road at about 1 p.m. Wednesday.

BC Emergency Health Services confirms to NEWS 1130 that three paramedic units were dispatched, and that one person — who has been identified by RCMP as a 25-year-old — was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The RCMP says in an email that the woman died of her injuries.

Details on what exactly happened haven’t been provided, however, WorkSafeBC says it is investigating.

“The purpose of our investigation is to identify the cause of the incident, including any contributing factors, so that similar incidents can be prevented from happening in the future,” WorkSafe says in an email.

The incident happened at Tree Island Steel on Boundary Road. The company produces and supplies steel wire and wire products.

In a statement, a spokesperson says the company will not be commenting while the investigation is ongoing.

“We extend our deepest sympathies and sincerest condolences to the family, friends and co-workers of the individual and all our employees. This is a difficult situation for all concerned. At this time, we are respecting the privacy of the family and offering support services to them and to employees requiring such support,” it reads.

“Safety has always been the company’s highest priority and we are working closely with investigative authorities and conducting our own internal investigations of the accident.”
