Woman shot by RCMP in Ucluelet; police watchdog investigating

UCLUELET (NEWS 1130) – The Independent Investigations Office of BC has been called in after an Indigenous woman was shot by officers near Ucluelet on Saturday.

In a statement, police say they responded to a disturbance at a home on Albert Rd. in Port Albion, around 5 p.m., after receiving reports that a man required medical attention.

When officers arrived, a man and woman were found, with police saying the woman was allegedly in possession of a weapon.

Police fired shots, leaving the woman with serious injuries. Both the man and woman were taken to the hospital.

“We would like to acknowledge there has been a serious incident in hitac̓u this evening. Full details are currently under investigation. A statement for public information will be issued when complete details have been provided,” the Ucluelet First Nation said in a statement posted to Facebook.

The IIO is called in to investigate all officer-related incidents that result in harm.
