80% of restaurants losing money, barely breaking even: Restaurants Canada

CALGARY – Canada’s restaurant industry is calling on the government to help out the struggling industry.

Restaurants Canada says without intervention, many members will be shutting down their pubs and diners for good.

James Rilett with the group says the biggest problem for restaurants has been all the uncertainty.

“People haven’t been able to plan. They don’t know when to try and get staff back, they don’t know how much food to get,” he said.

The organization also says 80 per cent of restaurants are either losing money or barely breaking even.

Rilett says they’re asking Ottawa to extend wage and rent subsidies for at least another year, or more businesses could go under.

With Alberta’s restrictions on dine-in service, more than 52,000 restaurant workers are currently out of work.
