Apartment fire in Surrey leaves dozens of people temporarily displaced

SURREY (NEWS 1130) — A fire early Saturday morning in the Fleetwood area of Surrey, has left dozens of people living in a 56-unit building displaced.

Deputy Fire Chief Mark Griffioen says as of 2 p.m. the fire which broke out in the four-storey building on 84th Avenue near 159th Street is looking better than it has so far, with no smoke rising at the moment.

Deputy Fire Chief Mark Griffioen says they’re still trying to get the hot spots in the roof of the building out.

“We’ve reduced the number of crews here, done a shift change, and we’re just trying to get to those spots that we just can’t reach with water from a safe position.”

The cause of the fire remains unclear since the investigation won’t begin until the fire is out, Griffioen explains.

No one is believed to have been hurt.

Those living in the building have been relocated for the time being, while provincial assistance is also being provided to people living in the building next door, as their electricity — which both buildings shared — could be out for as long as three days.

“We’re working with the emergency support services through the province to ensure that these people have what they need.”

84th Avenue is closed between 160th Street to 158th Street. Use Fraser Hwy or 88th Avenue.
