Vancouver man faces racist remarks when he confronts driver of hit and run

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Just a day after a Vancouver man was the victim of a hit and run, he says he was able to encounter the man who hit his car, but during the confrontation, he was met with a racist comment.

Patrick Shi was driving on Marine Dive Thursday when he was side-swiped by a white car that drove off. After writing down the license plate number, reporting the collision to ICBC and the police, the following day, he saw the same car.

He followed the car to the driver’s house and confronted the man for his information regarding the hit and run.

However, the man denied the incident and allegedly said, “no wonder people don’t like Asian people.”

When Shin heard the remark he says he got angry and raised his voice because he was shocked and given the anti-Asian hate crimes in Vancouver, he knew he didn’t want to let this encounter stay quiet.

“I couldn’t sleep last night thinking about what he would of done if my mom would run into him, people I care about, Asian people he could just belittle and disrespect,” Shi tells NEWS 1130.

A bystander eventually convinced the driver to give his driver’s license.

Shin also took to Reddit to post about this incident.

“It was the attitude, the racism, the blatant disregard to commit a hit and run that makes me quite angry.”
