North Shore Rescue challenges you to ‘Survive Your Own Adventure’

In an effort to help people make wiser choices in the backcountry, North Shore Rescue has launched an interactive video called Survive Your Own Adventure.

NORTH SHORE (NEWS 1130) – If a hike in Metro Vancouver’s backcountry is part of your plans this May long weekend, you are urged to first test your preparedness knowledge with a new online tool.

In an effort to help people make wiser choices in the backcountry, North Shore Rescue has launched an interactive video called Survive Your Own Adventure.

Team leader Mike Danks says the video will ask you to make key decisions both ahead of and during your virtual hike.

“It talks about what kind of backpack to bring, what equipment, which hike you should be doing, [and] how much daylight hours you have. There’s a lot of really key learning points that are involved in it,” he said.

The video walks you through a hike on the North Shore mountains and gives you opportunities to make what Danks calls “very critical decisions.”

“You will quickly find out that those decisions have a profound impact on the rest of your hike,” he explained.

The video takes about 15 minutes to complete and focuses on safety strategies, including letting people know where you’re going and making sure you know your own limitations.

“What’s really important … is to try all the different avenues, as you go through the scenario. That’s where the learning can happen,” Danks said. “You don’t want to just do it once and walk away from it. Each scenario brings you to a different outcome … which are all unique.”

Danks is reminding everyone conditions in the city don’t always match what you’ll get at higher elevations. He says there’s still quite a bit of snow up there, which can turn to ice later in the day.
