OTTAWA – The federal government is extending the passenger flight ban on India and Pakistan, the transport minister said Friday.

The ban was first brought in on April 22 and was scheduled to last 30 days. Omar Alghabra says it will now be extended to at least June 21.

The ban is on direct flights from those counties into Canada.

To discourage people from getting around the flight ban by booking flights through other countries, Canada requires passengers transiting through a third nation to go through customs in that country and remain there until they obtain another negative COVID-19 test.

Only then can they board their flight to Canada.

They are required to quarantine in Canada as well.
