North Shore Rescue searching for hiker missing on Mount Fromme

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — North Shore Rescue crews are trying to make contact with a missing hiker who separated from his friend while navigating tricky terrain Friday afternoon.

The pair veered off of a trail near Kennedy Falls and were trying to reach the summit of Mount Fromme, according to Search manager Doug Pope.

“It’s very treacherous terrain that they got into, and once they got into difficult terrain, they decided to separate,” he explains.

“One hiker went up to Mount Fromme, and he actually made it out, and he’s the one that that called for help for his friend. His friend descended from their location back down towards the Kennedy Falls Trail.”

The man who called for help was not hurt and is home safe, Pope says.

Pope says a helicopter with night vision and about a dozen crew members were out searching Friday night but after a fruitless night of searching, North Shore Rescue is back out Saturday morning.

“It’s never a great idea to separate, especially once you get into difficult terrain like that, but that’s what happened and we’re doing our best to try and find him. It’s dark now it’s not the greatest time to be searching but we’re hopeful we can get some voice contact with him,” he says.

“The good thing is that it’s a relatively warm night. He’s not very well equipped though –, not even a light — so he’s probably hunkered down somewhere. Hopefully we’ll find him tonight.”

Search crews say they’re looking in a densely forested area which is making searching from the air and ground challenging.
