Courage To Come Back Awards are back honouring ordinary people, leading extraordinary lives

The 23rd Courage To Come Back Awards - Celebrating those who have overcome adversity and give back to their communities.

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — The Coast Mental Health Courage To Come Back Awards are returning Saturday to celebrate five British Columbians who have overcome adversity and who give back to their communities.

Each year, the awards recognize people for not only coming back but giving back.

They are recognized in five categories: Addiction, Physical Rehabilitation, Medical, Mental Health, and Youth.

This year’s host is none other than former Canucks goalie turned Sportsnet 650 colour commentator Corey Hirsch.

Hirsch, whose accolades include a Memorial Cup, an Olympic silver medal, and a Stanley Cup, says none of them means more than his Courage To Come Back Award, which he received last year in the category of Mental Health.

“The Courage To Come Back [award] was absolutely huge for myself, but then to be able to host it is even a bigger honor,” Hirsch says.

He was recognized not only of overcoming so much, but for being such a powerful advocate for others. “These awards, being on TV this year is where they belong,” he says.

Hirsch says those who tune-in should expect to be inspired and motivated, and should bring a box of tissues.

“You’re going to see some people that deserve every accolade they get because of what they’ve been through,” he says.

“It’s just such a powerful moving event, and there’s nothing like it.

“These are people that deserve every award we can give them, and the love and support and accolades because of what they’ve been through. And then to be able to turn their lives into helping others is one of the most incredible things in the world,” Hirsch says.
