VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A man in his 70s has succumbed to his injuries after a fire broke out in an apartment building Saturday.

Vancouver Fire Department crews were called after reports of a fire in an 11th-floor apartment on Gilford Street, near Comox Street in the West End.

Assistant Chief of Operations Trevor Connelly says crews were greeted by thick black smoke when they arrived.

“When they entered one of the suites, they found a large amount of black smoke and a large amount of heat,” he says.

While searching the apartment, Connelly says crews found the man semi-conscious.

“We search while we’re trying to find and extinguish the fire. During that fire attack, in that search, they found a male, approximately age 75,” he notes.

Connelly says that while crews were able to bring the man down to the ground floor and transfer care over to the B.C. Ambulance Service the man passed away in the hospital.

Connelly confirms the man sustained second and third degree burns to a large portion of his body.
