Apology issued after memorial for 215 childen at B.C. Legislature taken down

VICTORIA )NEWS 1130) — Staff at the B.C. Legislature are apologizing after a memorial dedicated to the 215 children whose remains were found at a residential school in Kamloops was taken down over the weekend.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the Legislative Assembly of B.C. says after people gathered on the steps on Friday, they left candles and other offerings of support.

“Following the departure of those individuals, security officers extinguished the candles and collected the mementos. Compassion and sensitivity should have been exercised with the memorial items remaining in place,” the statement reads.
“The Legislative Assembly offers its sincere apologies for the hurt this has caused.”
Children’s shoes, flowers and candles have been placed on the steps, and staff say those will not be touched during this period of mourning.
