Northwest Territories launches reopening plan based on vaccination rates, COVID cases

YELLOWKNIFE — The Northwest Territories has released its COVID-19 reopening plan.

The plan, called Emerging Wisely Step by Step Together, sets specific targets, not dates, for reopening based on vaccination rates and COVID-19 case counts both in Canada and the territory.

Starting Wednesday, up to 200 people can gather outdoors, but indoor gathering restrictions won’t be eased until the end of the month.

By early summer, self-isolation requirements are to be removed for people entering the territory if first dose vaccination rates increase across Canada and COVID-19 cases drop nationally.

Dr. Kami Kandola, chief public health officer, says she anticipates all public health restrictions to be lifted in the territory by the fall.

As of June 5, 69 per cent of N.W.T. residents have been partially vaccinated against COVID-19 and 62 per cent are fully vaccinated.
