Family of teenaged Surrey murder victim hopes website leads to answers

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – The family of a 19-year-old who was found dead in an alleyway in Surrey four years ago has launched a website in the hopes it will help find the person responsible for his murder.

At about 5 a.m. on Aug. 20, 2017, Mounties were called to a fight on 127A St. near 68 Ave. When they arrived, officers found Tanner Krupa’s body.

The victim’s mother, Kim Krupa, says family friends created WhatHappenedToTanner.com in an effort to help solve this murder case. The website includes a 14-minute film with home footage of Tanner, news coverage of his death, and memories and anecdotes from family and friends.

“Tanner left behind so many loved ones who miss him dearly and we will never give up until we find those responsible,” his mother said.

Tanner, who was from Edmonton, was not previously known to police. In the video, Kim says after he graduated from high school, he spent stretches of time in B.C. for work.

On the first anniversary of the homicide, Sgt. Frank Jang with IHIT spoke to reporters, saying police later learned a group of men were involved in the fight that led to the death.

“Investigators believe some of the males in the group did not participate in the assault, but were bystanders with firsthand information about what happened to Tanner. This same group of males is believed to be associated to a white Toyota Corolla and a white Honda Civic that were captured on video surveillance,” he said.

“Those males that were part of that group that was there that night when Tanner died… It’s never too late to do the right thing. If you have information, please come forward today and help us find some answers for his family, Jang said in 2018.

The new website also directs people to ways they can submit tips in the case, and describes Tanner’s Totes, a volunteer program created in his name that distributes essential items to less fortunate people in the Edmonton area.

Anyone with information is asked to call the IHIT information line at 1-877-551- IHIT (4448), or by email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
