Zero COVID-19-related warnings sent out for Surrey schools: superintendent

SURREY (NEWS 1130) — For the first time this school year, no COVID-19-related notices have been sent to parents, staff, and students in Surrey.

Superintendent Jordan Tinney took to Twitter to celebrate the occasion Friday, sharing what he called his “best COVID Tweet of the year.”

In an online statement, the district details the decline in exposure notices since their peak in April — when 375 exposure notices were sent home, along with 697 letters warning students to self-monitor for symptoms. So far in June, there have been 19 exposure notices, and 39 self-monitoring letters. In April 67 “class-isolation” letters were sent home, so for this month there have been two.

“The number of cases of COVID-19 in the Surrey School District has decreased dramatically over the last month, thanks to high staff and community vaccination uptake, and the continued vigilance of staff and students in following health and safety protocols,” the statement says, adding more than 90 per cent of staff have received one vaccine dose.

The trend in the largest school district in the hard-hit Fraser health region mirrors a province-wide decline in new cases and hospitalizations.

The news out of Surrey comes days before the province is set to begin Phase Two of its reopening plan, which includes allowances for gatherings of up to 50 people for seated, indoor, organized events with safety protocols, as well as gatherings with a maximum of 50 people outdoors. Travel within the province will also be allowed.

On Friday, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix reported that 75.1 per cent of adults and 73.1 per cent of those older than 12 have at least one dose.

“As long as we increase our contacts in a slow and measured way, register and get fully vaccinated, and continue to use our layers of protection, we can confidently move forward with BC’s Restart plan,” Dix and Henry added.
