WEST VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — A speeding driver crashed her car through an elementary school fence in West Vancouver just as class was being dismissed Tuesday. Police are saying it’s an “absolute miracle” no one was hurt.

According to the West Vancouver Police Department, a woman was driving near Cypress Park Elementary School around 3 p.m., and was trying to park

“Officers determined that the vehicle had been seen driving toward an open parking spot next to the playground, when it suddenly accelerated, crashing through a chain-link fence, and landing close to a nearby play-structure. There were many children and adults in the area at the time.

“The vehicle had been seen driving toward an open parking spot next to the playground, when it suddenly accelerated, crashing through a chain-link fence, and landing close to a nearby play-structure,” a statement reads.

Firefighters also had to be called to the scene because the fuel tank of the Mercedes SUV had been punctured, and “approximately 50 litres of fuel was spilled on the playground.”

The driver was issued a ticket, and police say this incident came just days after she was ticketed for speeding in the same school zone.

Const. Kevin Goodmurphy is reminding drivers that the speed limit in school zones is 30 km/h between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

“This is a stark reminder to slow down and pay attention while driving near schools,” he says.

“We can’t stress this enough — slow down. Our children are worth it.”
