Two charged with mischief in racist incident at Richmond cafe

RICHMOND (NEWS 1130) — Two people have been charged with mischief after “an assault involving racial slurs” at a Steveston cafe in March, according to police.

On March 29, police were called to a business on Moncton Street near No. 1 Road. One person was immediately arrested. Charges were recommended last month, and approved Thursday.

“Our investigators conducted a thorough and extensive investigation and their efforts have resulted in charges being laid against two individuals,” writes Insp. Michael Cohee with the Richmond RCMP in a statement.

“Hate has no place in our community. We are committed to investigating every incident to its fullest and will pursue charges where a potential offence has been committed.”

Police have not said which racial slurs were used or provided any more details about the incident.

Police are encouraging anyone who experiences or witnesses a “hate incident” to contact police by calling 911 if it is an emergency, or the local department’s non-emergency line if the incident is no longer in progress.
