TOFINO (NEWS 1130) – The only route to getaways on Vancouver Island, like port Alberni and Tofino, was shut down for some time Thursday because of a gas station fire in Whiskey Creek.

Four fire departments spent hours trying to get the fire under control after a camper went up in flames and spread while at the pumps at the Co-op station.

Many weekend travellers were stuck along Highway 4 as tankers had to ferry water back and forth to the station, since there’s no hydrant to tap into in the area.

The heavy congestion tapered off slowly by 10 p.m., with many people turning around during the closure.

Few other details have been provided. It’s unclear if anyone was hurt.
