VPD respond to large fight at English Bay, one person arrested

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Vancouver Police had to call in extra officers to help break up an alleged large brawl at English Bay Friday night.

According to police, a fight broke out near the Cactus Club at around 7 p.m. and the VPD say it involved 10 people following a possible assault.

It’s not clear exactly what sparked the violence.

More officers were needed to keep a “large and hostile crowd” which formed back as police made an arrest.

A video posted on YouTube shows two officers holding the arms of a young person of colour near the Cactus Club Cafe.

The struggle between officers and the young man quickly draws a crowd and some pull out their phones and start demanding to know the officers’ names.

One bystander gets right in the middle of it prompting one of the officers to grab his phone and throw it away.

The bystander then pushes a female officer to the ground, and her baton is sent rolling down the sidewalk.

“The officers tried to disperse the crowd, but one of the aggressors refused to leave,” an email statement from the VPD reads.

“He became hostile, began causing a disturbance, assaulted at least one of our officers, and resisted arrest.”

Eventually backup arrives, and the crowd starts to disperse.

The suspect arrested is a man in his 20s from North Vancouver. He was taken to jail and multiple charges are being recommended.

Three officers were hurt during the incident and one was taken to hospital with a significant injury.
