B.C. high school students receive Ted Rogers Scholarships for higher education

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Dozens of B.C. high school grads just got a helping hand from Rogers. Thirty-five members of the Class of 2021 in B.C. have received Ted Rogers Scholarships.

Scholarship recipients receive $2,500 per year for up to four years for post-secondary education. Rick Sellers, regional President of Rogers for B.C., says the students were recognized for things like their grades, volunteer efforts, and leadership skills.

“Collectively, the recipients for this year are right across the province — anywhere from Vancouver, Victoria, Kelowna, Delta, Kamloops, Prince George, Surrey, and Williams Lake,” Sellers said.

In total, 375 scholarships were awarded across the country. Sellers notes nearly three quarters of the winners identify as members of equity-seeking groups including Black, Indigenous, People of Colour, LGBTQ2S+, and young women.

“We take it for granted that post-secondary is accessible for everybody. We know that’s not the case,” he said.

“For us to be able to play a part in that, to provide financial assistance to these brilliant young minds that otherwise wouldn’t necessarily have access to it, it’s heartwarming. It’s something we believe thoroughly in doing. We believe in giving back to the communities we live, work, and play in.”

Rogers is the parent company of NEWS 1130 and CityNews Vancouver.
