Dog rescued after being stranded near Seymour River in North Vancouver

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A dog that had gotten stranded near the Seymour River is safe after it got stranded Wednesday evening.

It only took fire crews with the District of North Vancouver about half an hour to rescue the pooch after it got stuck when chasing a ball.

The one-year-old Labrador/retriever mix, named Stella, got caught on a dangerous cliff over-looking the Seymour River off of Fishermans’ Trail, according to Assistant Fire Chief David Dales.

“What was easily more concerning is that there were some bystanders who were going to attempt the rescue on their own,” says Dales. “So, we responded and we deployed our technical rescue firefighters and were able to quickly get to the dog.”

He says in cases like this, you should wait for the pros, instead of trying to execute your own rescue.

“If you are a witness, or if it’s involving yourself, don’t try to execute the rescue by yourself,” Dales warns. “Call 9-1-1, North Van District Fire will always respond, and we usually have these rescues done in 30 minutes.”

He says it was a heart-warming moment for the owners, and for the emergency crews.

“It was a very emotional moment for the fire-fighters involved, a lot of our fire-fighters are dog owners,” says Dales.

“The dog owner was very happy, and that dog will likely be on a leash for the next six months,” he adds with a chuckle.
