Mission classrooms will be closed Monday due to the extreme heat

MISSION (NEWS 1130) — The heatwave in store for the Lower Mainland over the next few days has caused schools in Mission to close down on Monday.

The school district says many of their elementary schools do not have air conditions that can sufficiently cool classrooms in soaring temperatures.

“We have been monitoring expected temperatures for the coming week and we are concerned about the temperatures reported for Monday, above 40 Celsius,” a statement from the district reads.

A heat warning is in effect for the region covers what is being called a “dangerous long-duration heatwave,” predicted to last from Friday, June 25 until Wednesday, June 30.

The district apologizes for the inconvenience and says schools should reopen on Tuesday.

“Staff will be reporting to work as usual and will be available to support students and parents. We will also be monitoring temperatures in schools and staff may be required to relocate depending on local conditions,” the statement adds.

“Please keep safe and cool during this heatwave.”
