Burnaby woman bakes cookies on dashboard during heatwave

BURNABY (NEWS 1130) — A Burnaby woman decided to test just how hot it was inside her car Monday, and satisfied a craving for freshly-baked cookies while she was at it.

A recipe for Dashboard Chocolate Chip Cookies can be easily found online.

Mel, who didn’t provide her last name, followed the instructions. She says she looked up the recipe because she wanted a treat but didn’t want to heat up her home by turning on the oven. Baking two cookies in a sweltering vehicle took a lot longer than using the traditional kitchen method.

“They tasted like cookies at least! Maybe a bit crispy on the top as I had them in the car for five hours,” she told NEWS 1130 in an email.

“To be honest I was surprised how well it worked! I was expecting a half-baked cookie of some sort but it came out cooked [which is] hilarious and terrifying at the same time.”

The temperature outside was 41 C. According to online calculators, car sitting in that heat for a prolonged period will heat to over 65 C.

While skipping the oven was a plus, Mel rates her overall satisfaction with the cookies as a seven out of 10, and has no plans to make a habit out of using this method.

“It was kind of mediocre,” she says.

“I’m not quitting my day job to start a solar car bakery, but if someone wants to do it…By all means go for it!”
