Ants return to Lower Mainland homes in search of food

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Have you seen ants around your kitchen or home? You’re not alone! An expert says they’re on the hunt for food.

Michael Johnston with Atlas Pest and Wildlife Control in Surrey says this is prime time for ants.

“Once they’re getting active, they’re planning to build their nest or grow their nest and lay their eggs. For them to do that, they need a food source,” he explained. “Unfortunately, being a pest, they are going to find food in very many places.”

He says it’s key to keep your kitchen and home clean if you want to deter them from scouting out your kitchen for something to eat.

“If you get rid of food, AKA crumbs on the floor, you put a lid on your garbage bin or you remove the garbage at the end of the night, you’re reducing all these attractants that can attract the ants and make them come inside. Same with water. So if you’re reducing these things or moving these things, doing more cleaning, they have to go somewhere else to find food,” Johnston said, noting kitchens have everything an ant needs.

If you want to try to deal with ants yourself, you can find products at your local hardware stores or find solutions online.

However, if you have an infestation, Johnson suggests calling in the experts. He notes most companies provide free inspections and quotes.
