SURREY (NEWS 1130) – Mounties in Surrey say they’re looking into several incidents of hate graffiti around the Newton area.

According to the RCMP, anti-Muslim graffiti has been popping up around the neighbourhood since July 5. Investigators believe the same person or group is responsible.

Mounties say the graffiti has been spotted on a garbage bin, on a business property, and on a utility pole near a mosque on 72 Avenue and King George Boulevard.

The most recent case was reported on Wednesday, July 14. One image shared by the RCMP shows the words “Islam is evil” written on the back of a refuse bin.

“These types of incidents have a significant impact on the feeling of safety and security for members of our Muslim community,” says Const. Sarbjit K. Sangha. “Hate crimes and hate motivated criminal activity has no place in Surrey and our officers are working diligently to identify those responsible for these incidents.”
